Founded in 1995, The Shakespeare Project of Chicago was created to achieve three main goals:
To bring to life the words of William Shakespeare and the world's other great dramatists.
To foster the talents of members of Actors' Equity Association, the professional union of actors and stage managers.
To present the plays to members of our community for free.
Our mission today includes Educational Outreach programs to augment Shakespeare studies for middle school, high school and university students. Over the past 21 years, The Shakespeare Project of Chicago has produced theatrical readings of over 100 classic plays (each of Shakespeare's plays at least once), presented by professional actors to our audiences free of charge. Utilizing the talents of Equity actors with credits ranging from Broadway, off-Broadway, regional houses, pre-eminent Shakespeare festivals and the major Illinois houses, we make these passionately performed classics available to all, without regard to income, race, age or any other demographic. Our artistic focus is firmly rooted in the text of the play, illuminating meaning and emotion through the actors' exploration of The World in Words.
